Mars bar-Plate Tectonics Experiment

In this mars bar plate tectonics experiment, we took a mars bar and we cut it in half. We acted like the two halves were two plates and We took pictures of the plates and the different boundaries. I enjoyed this Project very much because it was a different way to think about plates and how earthquakes happen. It was very unique and very creative. At first though when we got our mars bar i was pretty hungry so when working with the Bar it felt like torture but then we got to eat it when we were done. And now I will tell you about the Plate boundaries and I will show you how we used the mars bar to show the boundaries.

Before we get into the boundaries and the plates let me show you some of the Layers and the fault line. Lets start with the layers As you can see from the picture below I used the top chocolate to show the crust, the caramel to show the upper mantle and the nuget to show the lower mantle. Even though I really like this experiment I don't think that this is a good representation of Earth because earth has many more layers that i couldn't show because the mars bar didn't have enough layers so i had to leave out some layers.

Now the fault line. When an earthquake happens and one plate wins another. The losing plate has an earthquake and when a plate gets an earthquake the plate breaks and when it breaks it gets a fault line. Let me show you how it looks like.

Now let's start with the Plate Boundaries. First the Divergent Plate Boundary and you might be thinking that sounds a lot like the movie Divergent well it's not let me explain why. Divergent Boundaries are when two plates move away from each other. As you can see from the picture below.

Next Convergent plate boundaries. Convergent plate boundaries are when two plates are moving towards each other. When a convergent boundary happens and two plates move towards each other there is bound to be an earthquake big or small. they basically push on each other and go up until the weaker plate falls and then there is an earthquake where the weaker plate is. Now when an Oceanic plate ( an plate in the ocean ) Hits a land plate the oceanic plate goes directly under the land plate and that is what causes volcanoes.

The last Boundary is the Transform Boundary. The Transform boundary is when the plates move side to side. Like this.

Thank you for reading my Blog. I truly did enjoy this Experiment/Activity.
